About Dr. Lansdale

Dr. Lansdale was born and raised in Sandy Spring, Maryland.  He graduated from Mercersburg Academy in Pennsylvania and then attended Harvard College, majoring in American History and Literature.  After graduating cum laude in 1976, he stayed at Harvard two more years to complete pre-medical course requirements.  He was accepted to Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio, obtaining his M.D. with honors in 1982.  He completed his internal medicine residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1985.  Following his residency training, Dr. Lansdale served on the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, teaching medical students and housestaff until 1987, when he was recruited to Brigham and Womens’ Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston.  As a clinician-educator in the Division of General Internal Medicine at Harvard, he continued his life-long interest in the education of physician trainees while building the largest academic general medicine practice at the time at Brigham and Womens’ Hospital.

Dr. Lansdale returned to Maryland in 1993 and joined the staff at Greater Baltimore Medical Center, serving on the faculty of the GBMC Internal Medicine Residency Program.  In 1994 he assumed directorship of the teaching program. In 1996 he was appointed Chairman of the Department of Medicine at GBMC, a position he held until July 1, 2005.  As Residency Program Director, he was instrumental in improving the medicine residents’ pass rate on the American Board of Internal Medicine Certifying Examination to 100%.  As Chairman of the Department of Medicine, he maintained a busy private clinical practice, designed and developed one of the region’s largest “hospitalist” services, improved the quality of the medical intensive care units, and served in a variety of leadership roles in the organization, particularly in the areas of clinical effectiveness and patient safety.  Dr. Lansdale personally supervised the training of over 200 interns and residents in medicine during his years as a clinician-educator at GBMC.  In 2001 he was elected to Fellowship in the American College of Physicians.  Since 1994 he has maintained a faculty appointment as Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.  He currently serves on the board and directs the physician advocacy committee of Healthcare for the Homeless.

Dr. Lansdale lives in Towson near the Loch Raven reservoir with his wife, Jennifer Lansdale, an artist, daughter Olivia Lansdale, a student at the McDonogh School, and Dudley, an aging Weimaraner.  In addition to his love for clinical medicine, Dr. Lansdale enjoys fishing, golf, music, and beekeeping.
